How to make your inverter battery last longer

The battery is the part of your backup system that wears out first, and a new one is not cheap. The good news is that most batteries die early because of how they are treated, not because they were faulty. A few simple habits can add years to a battery's life. Here is what actually matters.

Quick answer. Do not drain the battery too deep, recharge it promptly, keep it cool and ventilated, and for tubular batteries, top up the water. These four habits do most of the work.

Do not drain it too deep

This is the single biggest factor. Every time you run a battery down close to empty, you shorten its life. Drain it flat often and it may last a year. Use only the top part of it and the same battery can last for years.

A normal lead-acid or tubular battery should not go below about half. Lithium batteries handle deeper use, but even they last longer if you do not run them to zero every day. If your battery keeps hitting empty, it is too small for your load. Size up rather than punishing the battery.

Recharge it promptly

Leaving a battery sitting empty is bad for it. In lead-acid and tubular batteries, a process called sulfation starts when they sit discharged, and it permanently reduces capacity. Battery University's guide to sulfation explains why prompt recharging matters so much.

Recharge the battery fully as soon as power returns. Do not leave it half-charged or flat for days. If you are away and the battery will sit unused, leave it charged, not empty.

Keep it cool and ventilated

Heat is a battery killer. A battery kept in a hot, closed space ages much faster than one kept cool. Place it somewhere with airflow, out of direct sun, and never in a sealed cupboard.

Ventilation matters for safety too. Lead-acid and tubular batteries give off gas while charging, so they need open air around them, never a closed box.

Top up the water, for tubular and lead-acid

Tubular and flooded lead-acid batteries lose water slowly as they work. If the level drops too low, the battery is damaged. Check the level about once a month and top up only with distilled water, never tap water, up to the marked line.

Sealed and lithium batteries do not need this. They are maintenance-free on water. This tip is only for the flooded types.

Keep the terminals clean and tight

Loose or corroded terminals waste power and can damage the battery over time. Check that the connections are tight and free of the white or green powder that is corrosion. Clean them if needed and a thin smear of petroleum jelly on the terminals helps stop corrosion coming back.

Let it charge properly

A battery that is charged too fast, too slow, or overcharged wears out sooner. A good inverter with the right charge settings handles this for you. If you can set the charging current, match it to the battery size the maker recommends, and avoid cheap chargers that boil the battery.
